C. Stuart Duncan Obituary

C. Stuart "Stu" Duncan
Age 97, formerly of Penn Hills, passed away peacefully on Monday February 26, 2018; Lovingly devoted husband for 70 years to Doris, who preceded him in death; Father of Jan (Fran) Collins, Scott (Karen) Duncan, and the late David (Lydia) Duncan; best grandfather in the world to Jordan Litvin, Erin (Mike) McClain, Megan (fiancé Tommy Van Volkenburg) Collins, and Marcus Fierro; also preceded in death by his brother Owen; Stu was born and raised in North Wilkesboro, NC and was a true Southern Gentleman. He was an honors graduate of N.C. State University with a degree in electrical engineering and was hired by Westinghouse in 1941 as a research and development engineer where he worked for 45 years. Stu was one of the first researchers in the world to successfully grow a silicon crystal in a laboratory. Crystal growth and the development of the solar cell became the major emphasis of his research. As one of the earliest pioneers in the "Silicon Revolution ", Stu earned numerous patents and awards as the head of Westinghouse's Photoelectricity Division and manager of Crystal Technology. Poor eyesight prevented Stu from qualifying for military service during WW II. Instead, he served and protected our country by working with other engineers to re-design the electric circuitry system for Air Force aircraft during the war. Nothing in life meant more to Stu than his beloved wife Doris, children, and grandchildren. They loved to travel and took numerous trips across the country. Family and friends received Thursday from 4-8 PM at CHARLES W. TRENZ FUNERAL HOME, INC., 11110 Frankstown Road, Penn Hills. A memorial service will be held Friday March 2, 2018 at Hebron U.P. Church, at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Stu's memory to www. michaeljfox.org
