January 13, 2018

Allston, Elise Melvin, on Saturday, January 13, 2018, of Pittsburgh, PA

April 1931 to January 2018

Cherished mother of Herb (Jan) Getty, Elise (Nathaniel) Hunter, Mark (Ellen) Allston, Michael (Nicole) Getty, Marvin (Vicki) Ainsco, and the late Frank Williams; Sister of Theresa (the late Lou) Diulus, Richard (Barbara) Melvin; Grandmother of Adrienne (Kyle) Hooker, Marissa (Anthony) Guarascio, Grant Hamilton, Marcus& Ashton Costanza, Patrick Allston, Michael Getty, Seth Hunter, Laura Allston; Great-grandmother of Bradyn, Bryce, Brylee, Cameron, Eli, and Isabella.  Also survived by a large extended family, many friends, and precious neighbors.  As Elise began to deal with many ailments later in life, Anthony and Marissa took her into their home and became entrusted companions as well as medical caregivers.

Elise, self-named, “The Warden,” found great joy in caring for others throughout her life – from welcoming over thirty children into her home, to hosting international students, to babysitting grandchildren, and to making sure everyone in her life knew they were loved.  Always quick-witted with a sassy comment, The Warden will be remembered for her laugh, her candidness, and her fabulous sense of humor.

Before she and her husband George F. Allston started their family, Elise lived in Shadyside.  She was a graduate of Peabody High School and Robert Morris University, and worked as an executive assistant at Rockwell International.  Many of the songs Elise sang with the Rockwell chorus became favorites of her family over the years.  Elise and George were the owners of Allston Insurance Agency and Ellie’s Ice Cream in Plum Borough.

A memorial service to honor Elise’s life and to celebrate her entrance into the Church Triumphant will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 3, 2018, at Shadyside Presbyterian Church, 5121 Westminster Place, Pittsburgh, PA 15232.  A reception will follow at the church.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Family Resources, 1425 Forbes Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15219, www.familyresourcesofpa.org or to a charity of your choice.
