Age 91,of Plum, PA (fondly referred to as AJ, Tony, or Ace), passed away on Thursday September 15, 2022.
AJ was the youngest of four children born to Peter and Mary Malpede, who immigrated from Italy in the early part of the 20th century. He grew up in the East Liberty section of Pittsburgh and graduated from Westinghouse High School followed by a brief stint in the Air F
AJ attended Duquesne University and graduated with a degree in Business Administration. In his professional career he spent 35 years as a buyer with US Steel and an additional 10 years with Eichley Engineering.
In 1956 he met the love of his life, Margaret (Peg) Hertrick. They were married in June, 1958, spending 62 amazing years together before Peg passed away in July 2021. AJ and Peg were so close, they developed their own language, “elf talk,” which no one could understand but them.
AJ’s life epitomized one that was well-lived. An avid runner, he completed the Marine Corp marathon at age 50. He also loved golf, tennis and playing bridge, and rode his stationary bike 10 miles a day up until the very end. Family was the most important thing to AJ. He looked forward to spending significant time with his growing family, and so loved holiday celebrations and the tradition of spending a week at the beach every summer.
He loved happy hours and his beloved Pittsburgh Steelers and liked nothing more than to have a cocktail and cigar on the deck with family, while listening to songs by Matt Monroe and Frank Sinatra.
AJ is survived by his children Scott Malpede (Julie), Gregg Malpede (Jayne), Leslie Prokopik (Bob) and Drew Malpede, nine grandchildren, and one great grandson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Peg, and a grandson, Tyler.
