John Hess Obituary

John S. Hess Jr.

84, of Penn Hills, went to be with Jesus August 12, 2020.  Born July 30, 1936 in Fairmont WV, son of the late John S. Hess, Sr. and Ruth Ann (Collins) Hess.  Preceded in death by his loving wife of 49 years, Joan Margaret (Kirmeyer) Hess.  Loving father to Kristen Peters, North Huntingdon, PA, Stephen (Mary) Hess, Sanford, FL, Penny (Jim) Carey, Ellicott City, MD, and Kevin (Beth) Hess, Middletown, DE.  Adored by his grandchildren Nicole (Bill) Dodrill, Corinne (Caleb) Baker, Kyle (Anna) Hess, Jamie Carey, Ian Hess, Jenna Carey, Colby Hess, Reed Hess and Cooper Hess, as well as his 5 great grandchildren Cheyenne Fisher, Lucas Fisher, Sierra Vinsek, Samantha Vinsek and Laney Baker.  John was an Electrical Engineer, and a proud graduate of the Carnegie Institute of Technology.  He served in the US Navy.  After working as an electrical engineer at few Pittsburgh based companies, John retired from the Betis Laboratory. He coached numerous soccer and basketball teams for the YMCA and Penn Hills leagues.  He enjoyed camping, especially with the Penn Hills Sneakaways, Indian Princesses and Indian Guides, and most things outdoors.  He excelled at videography, starting his own company in the early 1980s.  He was very proud of the home he built for his family, doing almost everything himself, and making sure his children learned those skills too. His favorite times were spent playing volleyball, tetherball and croquet with his children and grandchildren on the courts he made for them.  He loved his West Virginia roots, and often visited the state.  John raised champion hunting beagles as a teen, and his love of dogs stayed strong throughout his life.  He was a member of Trinity Towers United Methodist Church and a former Trustee at Homestead Park United Methodist Church.  There will be no visitation.  Graveside Service for immediate family, Thursday August 20th at Jefferson Memorial Cemetery, officiated by Pastor Justin Judy, Trafford Trinity United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, or to the Humane Animal Rescue, Hamilton Ave., Pittsburgh, in honor of his beloved dogs, Shadow and Danny.
