Madolyn Ann Truxall Patterson McSweeny, age 98, a longtime resident of Longwood at Oakmont passed away on August 19, 2024. Madolyn was born in Greensburg, PA to the late Paul and Helen Adair Linhart Truxall. She married William Patterson (deceased) on July 3, 1946. They were married for 47 years. Madolyn married John McSweeny (deceased) in January 1997. They were married for 11 years. She was predeceased by son Richard Patterson, her brother Paul James and his wife Mary Jean Truxal, her sister-in-law and husband Margaret and Donald Wadsworth.
Madolyn was a loving and caring mother, grandmother, and great grandmother and is survived by Carol (Ron) Hoyt, Sandra (Gary) Chastek and Robert (Barbara) Patterson. She was a dear grandmother of Brian Hoyt, David (Nancy McSwiney) Hoyt, Matthew Chastek, Sara (Ryan) Loya, Jonathon (fiancé Sarah Hengel) Chastek, Lindsay Patterson, Ian Patterson and great grandmother of Silas Hoyt and many nieces and nephews.
The families of her ancestors, the Adairs, Linharts and Truxalls, all early settlers of Wilkins Township, Greensburg, Mutual and Five Points (near Congruity, PA), were very important to her and she requested much research about them for the benefit of future generations.
Madolyn graduated from Wilkinsburg High School in 1944 and worked as a file clerk in Newark, NJ and a mail clerk at the Pittsburgh Steel Company. She also attended Robert Morris Business School graduating in 1947. Madolyn worked as a receptionist at Family and Children’s Services in Pittsburgh from 1978 until 1990.
Madolyn previously resided in Greensburg, Wilkinsburg, Penn Hills, Carlisle, Pine Grove (all in PA), Norfolk, VA, Yokohama, Japan, Beckley, WV, Monterey, CA, and West Berlin, Germany. She also flew to Adak, Alaska in the Aleutian Islands and London, England to help with the birth of two of her grandchildren.
Madolyn was skilled at packing up a house for her many moves as a military spouse. She was involved with Brownies, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, room mother at many schools and Bible School teacher. She supported her children through music and dance lessons, musical and sporting activities and provided babysitting for many grandchildren. She also completely planned her daughter Carol’s wedding since she was in Japan. She was a longtime member of Hebron Church since 1948 and attended Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church as well. Madolyn also volunteered at Longwood at Oakmont.
Madolyn often described herself as a homemaker. She was that and so much more. She will be greatly missed by her family, relatives, and friends.
