Marjorie A. Whitson, age 95, of Longwood at Oakmont died on March 15, 2025. Born September 6, 1929, in Cleveland, OH, to Harmon D. and Edith Guyton Chaney, she grew up on a farm in East Liverpool, OH, and attended a one-room schoolhouse through seventh grade. Marjorie enjoyed music from a young age, playing piano, marimba, and vibraharp. By eighth grade, she was serving as a private accompanist. She followed in her mother’s footsteps, becoming an R.N. after graduating from Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing. In 1951, Marjorie married Robert Whitson and continued her nursing career at Presbyterian Hospital. After their children Jim and Susan were born, the family lived in Wilkinsburg, Penn Hills, and Houston, TX. She and Bob enjoyed traveling, including several trips to Europe. They were members of Hebron Church in Penn Hills. In 1999, they were among the first residents of The Woodlands at Longwood at Oakmont. Marjorie was predeceased by her parents, her brother, and her husband. She is survived by her son James D. Whitson and his wife Janet of Carson City, NV; her daughter Susan McFarland and her husband Gary of Orlando, FL; and her many devoted friends.
A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. Details will be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hebron Church or The Blessing Board, 880 Butler Street, Suite 1A, Pittsburgh, PA 15223. Her wish for family, friends, acquaintances and strangers was always “please take care of yourself and each other."
